Memphis Public Library
Library Info
Since its inception in 1893, the Memphis Public Library & Information Center has dedicated itself to supplying the public with informational services, comprehensive collections of books and other materials and the latest technology. Our methods are varied and our mission simple: To satisfy the customer’s need to know. Annually, more than 3 million people visit the Memphis Public Library & Information Center’s 19 locations.
There are many reasons to visit. Chief among them is the 330,000 square foot Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library that houses WYPL FM 89.3 and TV Channel 18. These unique broadcast services provide news, public service and community information programs, as well as special programs for the visually impaired. Mobile services include InFobus, an outreach vehicle for immigrant communities, Joblinc, a mobile job and career center and Training Wheels, a resource for child care centers. Ready reference and information and referral (I &R) services are offered through LINC/2-1-1, the Library Information Center, with more in-depth reference available from the various subject departments at the Central Library. In addition to such innovative services, the library offers educational and informational programs and community meeting rooms. Internet access is available on 517 public computers.
Recognized nationally as a leader in library service, the Memphis Public Library & Information Center received the National Medal for Museum & Library Service in 2007 and was identified by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a benchmark for library best practices.
