Queens Library

Library Info

The Queens Library serves 2.2 million people from 62 locations plus seven Adult Learning Centers and two Family Literacy Centers. It has circulated the highest number of books and other library materials in the country since 1994, and is the second largest public library in the U.S. in terms of size of collections.

The mission of the Queens Library is to provide quality services, resources, and lifelong learning opportunities through books and a variety of other formats to meet the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs and interests of its diverse and changing population. The Library is a forum for all points of view and adheres to the principles of intellectual freedom as expressed in the Library Bill of Rights formulated by the American Library Association.

Professor Melinda Powers
Program Scholar for the Queens Library

melinda-powersMelinda Powers, Assistant Professor of English at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, received her B.A. from Columbia, M.St. and M.A. from the University of Oxford and the University of Southern California, and her Ph.D. from UCLA (2007). Her teaching and research interests include ancient literature and its reception, historiography, performance theory, and especially the performance of Athenian drama on the ancient and contemporary stage. She has published on contemporary adaptations of the classics including her forthcoming article in theJournal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism “Unveiling Euripides”, an Oxyrhynchus papyrus of Demosthenes XIX, as well as reviews on contemporary performances of Greek drama. She is currently working on a book project with University of Iowa Press titled “The (W)hole Story: A History of Narrating Athenian Performance.”
