Library Info
It is the mission of the library to enrich the lives of library customers and to be a cultural center for Topeka and Shawnee County and in support life-long learning.
The Alice C. Sabatini Gallery will fulfill that mission through the presentation of exhibitions, and the collection, preservation, and maintenance of records for the permanent art collection, to make the collection available to the community of Topeka and Shawnee County through exhibitions and display through the library, and to assist with reference on objects in the collection and the artists who made them.

Program Scholar
Pamela Gordon
Chair and Associate Professor of Classics, University of Kansas
Program Scholar for the Topeka and Shawnee County Library
Pamela Gordon, Chair and Associate Professor of Classics at Kansas University, has a B.A. from Oberlin College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College. At KU she teaches Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as courses on Greek and Roman literature in translation. She received the Ned Fleming Award for Outstanding Teaching at KU in 1995, and her research has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies. Gordon’s research interests include the literature and culture of both Greece and Rome. Her publications include: Epicurus in Lycia: The Second-Century World of Diogenes of Oenoanda (University of Michigan Press, 1996); “Phaeacian Dido: Lost Pleasures of an Epicurean Intertext,” Classical Antiquity 17.2 (1998); “The Lover’s Voice in Heroides 15: Or, Why is Sappho a Man?” in Roman Sexualities, edited by Judy Hallett and Marilyn Skinner (Princeton University Press, 1998); “Some Unseen Monster: Rereading Lucretius on Sex,” in The Roman Gaze, edited by David Fredrick (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002); and “Remembering the Garden: The Trouble with Women in the School of Epicurus,” in Philodemus and the New Testament World, edited by John Fitzgerald, Glenn Holland, and Dirk Obbink (E. J. Brill, 2004). She also wrote the introduction to Stanley Lombardo’s Sappho: poems and fragments (Hackett 2002), and serves on the steering committee of the Hellenistic Moral Philosophy unit of the Society of Biblical Literature.
